May 30, 2004
5:45 AM, and we pull out of Champaign. I have been up since 3:30, watching the Weather Channel. When we lived in Illinois, we faced storms all the time. I guess we have a “Western Pa.” mentality these days, because I felt a bit apprehensive as they told of the weather we are about to drive into. Wayne looked at the maps, and said he thinks we will be fine. His father was also Wesley Faulkner, who used to sit with his boys watching the sky teaching them to respect but not fear tornados!
Amy Grant is singing, “This Is My Father’s World,” and a sense of peace has overcome me knowing God is protecting us as we travel. To all of you back in Pennsylvania, I promise, tomorrow’s weather looks a lot better in Nebraska!
Riah is already back asleep, and flat fields of foot high corn surround us. My eyes, are on the sky.
It’s a few hours from when I last wrote. We just went through the worst storms I have ever experienced while driving. I think the pictures could not possibly do them justice, but let’s just say the black sideways clouds were a bit scary. The Lord guided us through what we hope is the worst of the storm, and it’s not even raining now. It it gray and overcast, but praise the Lord for gray and overcast!!!
The John Deere Corporate Headquarters was so amazing. Riah was in little boy bliss. He climbed into everything he could, and did not want to leave. He kept saying, “This place is soooooooo me!” Luckily I picked up enough literature to keep him busy for a few miles. We had the whole museum to ourselves, until we went to leave when we met D.W. & Felicia Cleaver from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. They were very sweet, and it was nice to see once more what a small world it is!
Iowa has been beautiful thus far. I don’t recall thinking it was so pretty the last time we did I-80. Small rolling hills and a much less threatening sky make for a better afternoon than morning.
We stopped at Exit 267, to photograph an old Sinclair Gas Dinosaur, and then a whole A & W Rootbeer family! We love fiberglass ya know ;)
It seems like I no sooner write that the sky is clear, that it clouds up again. This weather is downright bizarre. It’s as though the clouds just reach down to the ground. Black sky…blue sky… all at once. At one point, a strong wind took rain side ways across the road, and my brave husband confided later that he believed it was a tornado coming right at us. I thought the same thing. We have felt God’s power today. We have also felt His grace.
We are finally at our hotel, and we are so glad. It’s been the longest day ever for us traveling, 749 miles once you add in a few side trips. (Email me if you are really curious! We had a little Wayne tour!)
The weather is the story today, so most of the pictures aside from the John Deere stuff are weather related. Enjoy. Tomorrow is to be clearer… we hope!
